Notes on running a first equity round

Nothing is published here yet. When it is, it will be three things: fundraising playbooks a first-time founder can act on, the investor perspective on what makes a round worth a meeting, and product notes explaining how Vanelo actually works out its numbers.

What this blog is for

A first equity round is mostly an information problem, and most of the information lives in conversations first-time founders are not part of. The point of writing here is to move a few of those conversations into the open: how a valuation range is built, what an investor is really scanning for in a data room, why a readiness score puts more weight on one dimension than another.

We would rather publish nothing than publish filler, so this page will stay short and will only ever carry pieces we would send to a founder directly. Every post will be dated when it is genuinely published, and never before.

No posts published yet. This page updates as each piece goes live.

Stream 01

Fundraising playbooks

Practical walkthroughs of the work a round demands: setting a funding ask, writing a use of funds, handling SEIS and EIS relief, and getting the due diligence checklist done before an investor asks for it.

Stream 02

The investor perspective

What the other side of the table is assessing, from stage and sector fit to ticket size, and what verified investors look at first when a campaign appears in Deal Discovery.

Stream 03

Product notes

How the tools reach their answers. The framework behind the Investability Score, the three valuation methodologies, and the reasoning behind decisions like returning a range instead of a single figure.

The first pieces we are writing

These are the four we are drafting now. They are not live yet, so there is nothing to click, and we are not putting a date on any of them until it is written.

How the Investability Framework weights its three dimensions

Why the 14 questions split into Viable business at 40 points, Sizable opportunity at 35 and Backable team at 25, what that weighting is saying about a first round, and how the tiers of Highly Investable, Investable with Improvements and Pre-Investable Stage should change what you do next.

What an investor actually opens first in a data room

A read on document order and what it signals, plus how per-recipient access grants, expiry and the access log let you see who opened what rather than guess at interest from a quiet inbox.

Scorecard, Berkus and Venture Capital: three answers, one range

How each methodology gets to a number, nine weighted factors against a comparable median pre-money, five factors on monetary tiers, and a Year-5 EBITDA extrapolation with a cap, and why Vanelo publishes the range they form instead of one recommended figure.

Building a target list that passes all three compatibility tests

Working the investor database of 1,389 records, 387 VC firms and 1,002 angels with 83 based in the UK, down to a list matched on stage, sector and ticket, then moving each name through the eight pipeline stages from Target to Funds Committed.

Until the first piece lands

The Inspiration Hub inside the platform already carries curated articles, playbooks and template banks, so there is reading available to subscribers today while this page fills up.

If there is something you want written about, tell us. Questions from founders mid-raise are the best brief we get, and a question that comes up three times usually becomes a post. Email hello@vanelo.io, or read what the platform covers on the about page and what it costs on the pricing page.

Tell us what to write first

If you are raising a first round and stuck on a specific question, send it over. We would rather answer the thing founders are actually asking than guess at a content calendar.
